SHAKOPEE, Minn. – On a night to raise awareness for Tuberous Sclerosis, Donny Reuvers won his sixth feature race of the year in the Country Joe Homes Late Models. In what could be explained only as a very hectic race, Donny Reuvers worked his way from the back of the field after an early race incident. Reuvers surged back towards the front, passing car after car. Two more mid-race cautions slowed the field, setting up for a 13-lap dash to the finish. Last weeks winner, Jason Schneider, led the field to the green as Reuvers restarted on his rear bumper. Schneider and Reuvers pulled away from the field as Reuvers tried to get under Schneider to no avail. On the following lap, Reuvers attempted the outside line and was able to stick his car next to Schneider. With seven laps remaining, Reuvers took the lead as the rest of the race with green. Schneider settled for second with Troy Wangerin rounding out the top three.
Steve Marschall either wins or breaks. This week was a fortunate one for him as he won his fourth Turtle’s Bar & Grill Hobby Stock feature in convincing fashion. Two early cautions slowed the race, but once racing resumed on the third circuit, it went green until the end. Marschall put on a clinic as he pulled away from the field. The race to watch was for second as defending champion Bill Woodworth pressured Mark Hawes for the duration of the race. Woodworth was able to get along side Hawes’ car numerous times, but was never able to inch ahead. Hawes edged out Woodworth at the line.
Todd Kamish visited victory lane for the first time in the 2006 season as he won the Coca-Cola Short Tracker feature. A late caution brought the field together for a four-lap dash to the finish. Kamish ran in second the entire race to that point, following pole-sitter Dan Dimmick for the first 16 circuits. However, as the field took the green and completed the first lap, Dimmick slid up out of turn four, opening the door for Kamish. Kamish was able to beat Dimmick to turn one, taking the lead. This also allowed Mike Dimmick to move into second, as Dan Dimmick fell to third at the line.
The Lupient Chevrolet of Belle Plaine Bombers had a close finish, as Jason Michaud edged out point leader Zack Kersting at the finish line. A caution with six laps to go brought the field together and Kersting on the outside of Michaud in the front row on the restart. For the final six laps, the two raced side-by-side, not giving each other an inch as they bumped into one another through the turns. However, it was Michaud on the inside line that prevailed as he beat Kersting to the line by less than a bumper. Bruce Mattison moved into third late in the race.
The first of two Miller Lite Figure 8 features was a wild adventure, as Rick Martin was able to move into the lead shortly after the midpoint. A caution halfway through the race was the only delay in the race, as the restart featured Kevin Rutten, who led all the laps to that point, and Rick Martin. Three laps following the restart, Martin was able to get by and take the lead for good. Rutten cut a tire and was forced to pull off the track as Dennis Barta inherited second place. Todd Wilson finished third. In the second Miller Lite Figure 8 feature, the drivers couldn’t get their cars any closer in the “X” without touching, as there were many close calls throughout the entire field. What was heartache for one man was a stroke of luck for another, as a lapped car pushed up John Lebens in the final turns of the race, enabling Steve Dehler to get by and claim the win. Lebens led every lap to that point, but settled for second. Troy Tuma rounded out the top three.
To help promote the cause of “Rev It Up For TS,” Chris Hawkey from KFAN was on hand to drive in a celebrity race featuring the Great North Legends. Also partaking in the race were Bruce Allen, a regular GNL driver sponsored by General Mills, Evernham driver Erin Crocker, and Ray Evernham himself. During the four car race, Evernham led nearly every lap, but settled for second as Crocker made a last lap pass to beat her boss to the line.
The very popular Hornet cars were also on hand, making a name for themselves on the quarter-mile track of Raceway Park. In addition to the Hornets, Boxcar racing was also part of the festivities, as children of all ages could make a cardboard boxcar of their favorite driver and race around the infield of the track.
