Goede gets first win at Raceway Park

By Corey Butler Jr.

SHAKOPEE, Minn. – One week removed from his older brother Jacob winning the ASA Minnesota Late Model Challenge Series Race at Raceway Park, younger brother Matt Goede won his first career Late Model feature Sunday at RWP. Goede held off “Racin’” Jason Schneider in the closing laps to win the main event in the Country Joe Homes Late Models on a scorching Sunday evening.  Schneider used his front nose to the best of his ability as he tried to get around Goede either on the high side or low side.  Goede would have none of that as he closed the door each and every time and won the race by less than a car length. The only caution came on lap six, after Goede used his front row starting spot to build an early lead before it was negated when Donny Reuvers and Gary Petrash made contact in turn four racing for second position that sent Petrash around.  The two were sent to the back of the field with Goede at the point, followed by Schneider and Troy Wangerin for the restart.  Goede and Schneider quickly worked away from the pack as Petrash and Reuvers worked through the field.  Six laps later, Reuvers moved by Petrash for third and settled in that position as Goede led Schneider across the finish line.

Lucas Grosinger won his first feature of the year in the Turtle’s Bar & Grill Hobby Stocks.  The win wasn’t easy as he earned the victory each lap, racing on the outside of pole sitter Louis Ansolabehere for the first eleven circuits.  Ansolabehere finally slipped up the track exiting turn two and that allowed Grosinger to get by and solidify himself in the lead.  On the next lap, Jeremy Wolff and Mark Hawes moved by Ansolabehere into second and third, respectively.  That’s where they finished.

Mike Dimmick utilized his front row starting spot to win by the Coca-Cola Short Tracker feature by a straightaway over Paul Haeg.  The race went caution-free as Dimmick pulled away from the field and the cars behind him jockeyed for position.  Dave Jones ran second the majority of the race before being overtaken by Haeg late in the race.  Jones settled for third.

Zack Kersting had a little lady luck on his side as he cruised to victory lane in the Lupient Chevrolet of Belle Plain Bomber main event.  Kersting was running on the outside of leader John Zumberge early in the race when Chevy Miller made contact with Zumberge’s rear bumper exiting turn four that sent Zumberge for a spin and Miller to the pits following a black flag for rough driving.  Kersting inherited the lead and never relinquished it, despite a late race caution and challenges from his competitors.  Allen Eldred and Greg Michaud finished second and third, respectively.

In the first of two Miller Lite Figure 8’s, Steve Dehler avoided many should be accidents in the “X” and corners alike.  After taking off for an early lead, Dehler slowed many times to avoid cars in the “X.”  That allowed Bob Hasert to surge up to Dehler’s bumper and eventually next to him.  However, Dehler had none of it as he powered back into the lead and remained there for the duration of the race.  Hasert settled for second and Adam Radiske rounded out the top three.

In the second Figure 8 feature, Troy Tuma topped the rest of the field as he found himself up front at the end of the 20-lap race.  Tuma, a master of close calls in the “X,” did not disappoint as he threaded himself through cars many times.  It worked out for Tuma as he led Dennis Barta and Dan McCarthy to the finish line.

You won’t want to miss the action next Sunday, July 23, as Wood Machine, Inc. presents a 30-lap Short Tracker feature and Kids Bike Ride.  Also on tap will be the Country Joe Homes Late Models, Turtle’s Bar & Grill Hobby Stocks, Lupient Chevrolet of Belle Plaine Bombers and Miller Lite Figure 8’s!
